Training Programme

The Sex, Drugs and HYP HOP training programme has been designed for teachers and other professionals who are involved in the delivery of substance misuse and relationships and sex education programmes to young people.

Programme Aims:

  • To equip participants with the confidence, knowledge and skills in order to develop and implement creative and innovative drug and alcohol education for young people
  • To provide participants with an understanding of the key issues relating to the delivery of drug and alcohol education including; personal belief systems, relationship between drug and alcohol consumption and adolescent sexual activity, consent, confidentiality and access to services


Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Debate and challenge key documents and relevant issues surrounding drug and alcohol education incorporating a holistic approach

2. Demonstrate an awareness of personal belief systems in relation to adolescent sexual health and drug and alcohol

3. Be aware of the most prevalent substances that are likely to be misused including possible effects, potential risks and the law

4. Be familiar with the HYP HOP Sex, Drugs and Alcohol Education Programme and define ways in which the resource can be used in order to enhance the health and well being of young people

5. Identify local drug counselling centres, contraception and sexual health services and other sources of support







Indicative Course Content Including Learning and Teaching Strategies

This one day training will take the Every Child Matters, Drugs Guidance for Schools (DfES 2004), and Hidden Harm (Home Office 2003) as key references. The Sex, Drugs and HYP HOP training programme will explicitly link with the intended learning outcomes detailed above. All presentations and group exercises will be included within the delegate packs and will aim to inspire ideas for delegate’s own professional practice leading to development of high quality drug education in order to meet the needs of all young people

The Sex, Drugs and HYP HOP Programme will provide:

  • Pre-course questionnaire and material for delegates to review as background reading prior to attending the session outlining relevant key documents (Learning Outcome 1)
  • A quiz relating to drug use and associated factors (Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3)
  • Power Point presentation to examine key data (Learning Outcome 1)
  • A values and personal belief systems exercise undertaken as a group activity (Learning Outcome 2)
  • Power point presentation to demonstrate the most common substances likely to be misused and their effects on the body (Learning Outcome 3)
  • A review of the Sex, Drugs and HYP HOP Resource and an opportunity to plan, deliver and evaluate a drug education exercise contained in the resource including drug awareness, understanding the effects of drugs on the body, exploring the reasons for drug use, understanding risks and harms, feelings, situations and consequences and the management of drug related situations.(Learning Outcome 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
