HYP HOP has challenged the ‘normal’ ways of delivering relationships and sex education programmes by involving young people in the development of the programme focusing on self esteem, media and peer pressure as well as negotiation and communication skills within relationships in order to:

• Empower young people to make safe, informed decisions concerning their physical and emotional wellbeing, including sexual health.
• Develop a greater awareness and confidence in accessing services that are available for young people.

The HYP HOP Relationships and Sex Education Programme is flexible and multifaceted comprising of workshops that reflect the fact that sexual health cannot be considered in isolation and other influences such as communication, relationships, self-esteem as well as media and peer pressure cannot be ignored. The development of the workshops contained within the HYP HOP programme has been a dynamic process following constructive criticism and robust evaluation by professionals and young people.

A key feature of the HYP HOP relationships and sex education programme is “The Letter” DVD resource. “The Letter” is a drama devised, scripted and performed by a group of young people which depicts the impact of diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned teenage pregnancy as seen through their eyes.
