It is well documented that there are some children and young people who are more vulnerable to teenage pregnancy, namely looked after children, children of teenage parents and those living in deprived areas. In addition, there are known risk factors for teenage conception including alcohol misuse, disengagement from education and youth offending.

The HYP HOP risk assessment screening tool and portfolio of interventions has the potential to reduce duplication of time and resources and includes the relationship between alcohol consumption and vulnerability to sexual coercion as well as additional information about the targeting of specific at risk groups such as those disengaged and excluded from mainstream education and looked after children.

The Kent Intervention Screening Tool (KIST) tool was commissioned by Kent Teenage Pregnancy and developed by a multiagency group of Kent professionals with a reference group of young people. The tool aims to build upon the knowledge and skills of frontline operational workers including health, school/LAC nurses, youth and community, teaching, youth offending service, Connexions, voluntary and statutory organisations in order to assist in a decision about the degree of sexual health risk taking of a young person. The scoring signposts to simple, easy to apply interventions for use on a 1-1 basis by the worker. The tool also advises when a referral is needed for intensive 1-1 work by sexual health outreach workers. KIST works alongside, and makes clear reference to child protection procedures and the common assessment framework (CAF).
